Honors Geometry

This Geometry course can follow any Algebra I program, whether the student has used Saxon Algebra I, Jacob's Elementary Algebra, or another First year Algebra course. This course presents all the geometrical concepts in a traditional fashion to the high school student. This course will sufficiently prepare the student for questions on the math section of the PSAT, ACT, or SAT standardized tests. Students completing this course as well as a previous Algebra I program will be ready to take the traditional second year of Algebra II. The Kolbe Academy recommended course of study includes continuing with Honors Algebra 2 and Trigonometry upon successful completion of this Honors Geometry course.

Course Description

This course is typically done in 9th or 10th grade. Topics include: conditional statements, direct and indirect proofs, Pythagorean theorem, lines and angles, congruence, inequalities, parallel lines, quadrilaterals, transformations, area, similarity, the right triangle, circles, the concurrence theorems, regular polygons and the circle, geometric solids and an introduction to trigonometry.  Kolbe Honors (OH) students will also cover conic sections.

Course Expectations

Students taking this course for Kolbe Core (OK) credit are expected to complete daily assignments, participate in class, and complete periodic exams and quizzes as assigned by their instructor.  All requirements are assigned and graded by the instructor.  Students will investigate geometric topics through the computer program, Geogebra, to enhance their learning and discover attributes of the shapes studied in the course. Students will also do many constructions with their compass.
