Algebra 1 Readiness

Whether it is due to being weak in math or wanting to stay fresh during the summer months, this course helps prepare students to take Algebra 1.

Course Description

Success in Algebra I depends on a good grasp of basic arithmetic. This course includes a thorough review of the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, and the order of operations. Students should be able to easily work with positive and negative numbers, fractions, ratios, and the commutative, distributive, and associative properties. Familiarity with basic geometric shapes and the concepts of perimeter, area, diameter, and radius will also be emphasized. 

The Algebra 1 Readiness class will include a review of key topics from previous math courses as well as an introduction to Algebra 1 material. Some of the topics to be covered include:

  • Order of Operations
  • Greatest Common Multiple and Least Common Factor
  • Fractions/Decimals/Percents
  • Negative Numbers
  • Writing/Solving Equations
  • Evaluating Algebraic Expressions
  • Collecting Like Terms
  • Distributing
  • Cartesian Coordinate System
  • Slope of a Line

Academic Workshop

Academic workshop classes will include mostly in-class work with some outside reading and/or homework. Academic workshop classes are Pass/Fail and are added to a student's transcript/report card only by request of the parent after the class is complete using this form. High school workshops will receive 2.5 credits and will receive the OS (Kolbe Summer Course) designation on the Kolbe transcript. Academic workshop classes are limited to a 20 student enrollment maximum.
