Honors Algebra 2 & Trigonometry

Topics in the Algebra 2/Trig (H) course include: linear functions, systems of linear equations and inequalities, quadratic functions and complex numbers, exponential and Logarithmic functions, rational Algebraic Functions, irrational Algebraic Functions, quadratic Relations and Systems (circles, ellipses, hyperbolas, and parabolas, trigonometric and circular functions; properties of trigonometric and circular functions; trigonometric Identities; triangle Problems; and vectors.

Course Description

The Algebra 2/Trigonometry (OH) course moves at a very quick pace and emphasizes the more difficult concepts and mathematical applications in the text. This course of study is recommended for students who received an A in either Algebra I or Geometry and received at least a B+ in both Algebra I and Geometry. Students who do well in the Honors Algebra 2/Trig course will find themselves ready for the study of Calculus during the following year. All students pursuing honors should expect to find the content and pace of the coursework challenging and should be sure to allot extra time for their studies. This course will have a heavier emphasis on the mathematical applications of concepts.

Prerequisites:

  • Algebra 1
  • Geometry with a grade of A OR Honors Geometry with a grade of B or above OR a teacher recommendation
Course Expectations

Students taking this course for Kolbe Honors (H) credit are expected to complete daily assignments, periodic exams and quizzes as assigned by their parent.  Kolbe Honors (H) students will go into more depth and cover more material than the Kolbe Core (K) students.

Assignment due-dates and some grades are established by the parent.  To receive honors credit with Kolbe Academy, students must submit a number of designated assignments to Kolbe Academy for grading, usually exams and select papers.  The parent- and Kolbe-established grades are averaged to produce the final grade for the honors course. Alternatively, a student may enroll in the Self-Paced Plus© grading assistance program to receive additional grading assistance by a Kolbe Academy faculty or staff member on designated assignments in the course.  In this case, parents may still submit grades for the student to be averaged in with the required Kolbe-graded honors assignments, or they may use the teacher-graded materials only to receive credit.
