Self-Paced FAQs

Interested in learning more about our Self-Paced program?  See below for commonly asked questions for Self-Paced (SP) and Self-Paced Plus (SP+) courses.

How are the Self-Paced courses different from regular homeschool courses?

SP: Self-paced courses are homeschool courses with additional material.  All self-paced courses include the full homeschool course plan organized into Schoology (Learning Management System) for easy student viewing (a PDF version of the homeschool plan is also included in the course’s associated parent group), along with video lectures and weekly self-graded quizzes.  Additional supplemental content may also be included in the self-paced course.  In addition, each Self-Paced course comes with access to an associated Parent Group which gives parents access to organized materials that will allow them to administer and proctor the course including items such as (but not limited to) exams, chapter tests, and answer keys.

SP+: Self-Paced Plus courses contain all of the above, with additional features: pre-selected assignments that students may submit to be graded by the course’s teacher moderator and a discussion board that allows students to reach out to the moderating teacher with questions regarding course content.

What’s the difference between the Self-Paced and Online lecture formats?

SP & SP+:  Most of our Self-Paced courses have lectures created and geared specifically for the self-paced student (Self-Paced lecture format).  A handful of Self-Paced courses do not yet have videos tailored for the self-paced student and instead use recordings from previous live Online Academy classes.  A course that uses previous recordings will be labeled under Lecture Format as Class Recording in the details section of the course’s web page.

How are the Self-Paced courses formatted?

SP & SP+:  Course content is organized into weekly folders in accordance to the homeschool course plan.  All reading and assignment instructions are listed within their specified week of the homeschool course plan.  Each self-paced course includes access to an associated parent group, which includes resources such as exams, tests, quizzes, and answer keys.

Where can I find the tests and answer keys for the course?

SP & SP+:  Answer keys are found in the parent group associated with the self-paced course.  The parent group is accessed from the parent view of the parent’s Schoology account.

Can I go back and re-watch a recorded lecture?

SP & SP+:  Yes.  Self-paced videos do not have a limit to the amount of times they can be viewed.

Can I contact the instructors for help with certain topics/concepts?

SP:  Parents should email advisors(at)kolbe.org with questions on course concepts/topics.

SP+:  A student may ask questions to the course’s teacher moderator via a discussion board included with the self-paced course, or parents can email advisors(at)kolbe.org with questions.

How does my student upload assignments for grading?

SP:  Students submit their assignments to parents for grading.  At the end of the student’s semester or school year, the parent submits the grades to Kolbe for reporting.
SP+:  Students can upload select assignments in Schoology to be graded by the course’s teacher moderator.  Instructions on how to submit an assignment can be found here.

How many assignments will the instructor grade for Self-Paced Plus?

SP+:  Junior high courses offer 8 – 10 graded assignments and high school courses offer 12 – 15 graded assignments.

Which assignments will the instructor grade for Self-Paced Plus?

SP+:  Assignments have been pre-selected by a qualified Kolbe teacher, and may include regular course assignments, quizzes, paper topics, and tests.

Do I still need to submit work samples when reporting grades for the Self-Paced Plus courses?

SP+:  Yes.  Questions regarding sample submissions can be emailed to advisors(at)kolbe.org.
