Painting - Kolbe Academy


Pre-Requisite: Drawing

In this course students will:

  • Learn the importance of good painting materials & brushes
  • How to maintain a clean & safe studio
  • Set up a still life
  • Learn how to represent objects in paint with a limited palette

They will construct an oil painting using a step-by-step method that becomes progressively more complicated as the semester progresses.  They will be given the tools to solve various problems an object poses:

  • Underpainting
  • Flat values
  • Turning form
  • Proportion
  • Blending

Lectures on portrait painters and figure artists will accompany assigned projects in order to open up the broad vistas of this tradition which was developed by some of the greatest artists in history.


  • 7-10 2B & HB pencils  (suggested brand: Staedler)
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Utility knife
  • T-square
  • Wooden art board  (large enough for 9×12 sheet of paper)
  • Sandpaper  (fine medium grit, about 150)
  • Sketchbook  (at least 9×12, suggested brand: Strathmore)
  • Knitting needle or Skewer  (must not bend in your hand)
  • Black artist tape
  • Standing easel  (must hold a 9×12 canvas, must allow student to walk back to view painting from a distance)
  • Tracing paper  (9×12)
  • Two 9×12 canvas panels  (cotton or linen, primed for oil or acrylic)
  • Palette knife
  • Brushes: Two brushes of each size 2, 6, 8, & 12 Filberts or Flats
    • Acceptable Brands: Utrecht Synthetic brushes, Blick Masterstroke Red Sable
  • Paints: Titanium White, Ivory Black, Burnt Umber, Raw Umber
    • Acceptable Paint Brands: Gamblin or Winsor & Newton (NOT WINTON)
    • Buy smallest tubes: 37ml ($6-$7 ea Blick Art Materials)
  • Mediums: Winsor & Newton Refined Linseed Oil (75 ml), Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits (16oz)
  • Make up sponges  (for oil, cleanup: at CVS/ drugstore)
  • Disposable gloves & apron
