Literature 6 - Kolbe Academy

Literature 6

The Online Academy will be offering a selection of novels from Kolbe Academy’s well-known Elementary Literature program.

An emphasis on the five principles that are essential for the student to understand and apply in reading literature will be made:

  • Read with objective charity
  • Understand that the parts do not condemn the whole
  • Recognize sin as such when he encounters it in his reading
  • Avoid works that contain tempting descriptions of sin
  • Understand that the function of fiction is not primarily to teach

Further, students will come to understand the four principles on the function of literature:

  • Art is a moral activity
  • Literature is fundamentally religious
  • Art inspires
  • Art is a means of charity

In Literature 6, the course will flow as follows:

  • 1st Semester: The Bronze Bow, Fingal’s Quest, and select poems from Favorite Poems, Old and New
  • 2nd Semester: Saint Catherine of Siena, A Single Shard, and I am David
  • Vocabulary will be incorporated into the course and will be relevant to the literary works read in class.

This course will be a bridge from Elementary to Junior High literature.  Each book study will conclude with a book report and an end-of-book exam

Students should expect to have daily reading, at least one (or more) weekly written assignments, required participation, and exams as assigned by their instructor. All requirements are assigned and graded by the instructor.  Vocabulary will be incorporated into the course and will be relevant to the literary works read in class. This course will be a bridge from Elementary school to Jr. High as far as literature goes.  Testing will focus primarily on units rather than cumulative quarters/semesters.
