Honors History 12 - Kolbe Academy

Honors History 12

United States and Modern History

Thought shapes history.  Man’s thoughts are shaped by his beliefs, his habits (be they virtue or vice), his society, culture, custom, environment, experience, and education.  Man shapes history through his choices, which are rooted in those soils of his thought.  As you read the pages of modern history you will see that man’s thought—beliefs and philosophies—are some of the most powerful forces on earth.

This course studies the major ideological trends of modern Western Civilization and their effects on the world.  In this course students will be asked to examine the work of a number of thinkers—philosophers, scientists and theologians — in conjunction with their study of historical events and documents.  In essence this is both a course in history and in political philosophy.  It will be most fruitful to seriously consider the power of an idea to shape history.

Students taking this course for Kolbe Honors (H) credit will have eight papers, a mid-term, and final exam each semester.  Additionally, core students should expect to have daily reading and minor weekly written assignments or quizzes.

Assignment due-dates and some grades are established by the parent.  To receive honors credit with Kolbe Academy, students must submit a number of designated assignments to Kolbe Academy for grading, usually exams and select papers.  The parent- and Kolbe-established grades are averaged to produce the final grade for the honors course.

Alternatively, a student may enroll in the Self-Paced Plus© grading assistance program to receive additional grading assistance by a Kolbe Academy faculty or staff member on designated assignments in the course.  In this case, parents may still submit grades for the student to be averaged in with the required Kolbe-graded honors assignments, or they may use the teacher-graded materials only to receive credit.
