Western Civilization I - Kolbe Academy

Western Civilization I

Light to the Nations 1

Western Civilization I covers world history from the beginning of recorded history to the present. It is a survey course for High School students who wish to have an overview of the ancient civilizations. If your student is in Junior High, they may register for this course as History 7, which uses the same text as this high school level course.

Western Civilization I covers world history from the beginning of recorded history to the inception of the French Revolution.  Beginning with the coming of Jesus Christ, and highlighting the achievements of medieval Christendom, this text focuses on the effects of the Christian faith on human civilization.  Western Civilization I uses Light to the Nations: Part One: The History of Christian Civilization.  Western Civilization II follows with the second volume, Light to the Nations: Part Two: The Making of the Modern World.

This introductory history course begins with the creation of the world and covers the concept of prehistory.  The study’s focus begins with Incarnation, and traces the development of Christendom from the founding of the Roman Catholic Church to the inception of the French Revolution.  While secular history is emphasized, the relationship between Church and state, as well as the relationship between Catholicism and other religions, is not overlooked.

Students taking this course for high school Kolbe Core (OK) credit will have additional requirements over and above the junior high students taking the History 7 course.  Students will have four major assignments each semester.  Two of those four assignments will be paper topic essays, and the other 2 may also be essays, but could instead include other types of creative projects, oral presentations, or other appropriate assignments pertinent to the course.  Additionally, core students should also expect to have daily reading, minor weekly written assignments, required participation, and exams as assigned by their instructor. All assignments are given and graded by the instructor.
